Virgin Atlantic Upper Class (compare to first class) is available from IAD and ORD to LHR with a connection on BMI to EDI a few hours later.

Or cheap ticket on BA to GLA.

Go to Alaska. Have a bush plane drop you off at a cabin in the wilderness. Bring your fishing gear.

My ticket priced out with $350 taxes and fees. Which segment is that pricing out so high for? Is there any way I could receive a credit on that on my Amex plat?

LHR normally adds quite a bit with all the assorted taxes and even more in premium class.

Option 1: your stay in switzerland is to short. You arrive after 12:00 , so you only have half a day. You can ask the other guys who went lately. Also if you only go to lucerne, you will only get there 14:00 or so, thats way to short. Switzerland is one of the nicest countries in europe. You need at least a full day...

LHR is expensive, I think FRA is also.
They can give you a breakout of the taxes line by line.

I have read reports of AMEX Plat covering (up to $200) of taxes paid on award tickets.

So my flights are ticketed. Here they are
Ewr Iad aug 14 19:25 20:55 co x
Iad cdg aug 14 21:45 11:25 co i
Cdg Zrh aug 17 20:20 21:30 lx I
Zrh lhr aug 18 20:25 21:10 lx I
Edi Fra aug 25 18:05 21:00 lh I
Fra JFK aug 26 10:25 12:45 lh i

Still hoping to leave from Lga or JFK on the outbound thru Iad.
Also hoping for better on the return. Not ideal overnight in Fra. Stay at Sheraton at theme airport but still...
Or at least hoping first opens up on that flight from Fra.
Other than that I am all set

good choice. You have a full day in Switzerland.
I dont really think its worth upgrading your return flight to F on LH. Its a day flight, business is good enough. LH F is nothing special, besides for the F terminal. Not worth paying extra 15k co miles for that

Tough call.  F will get you lie-flat which J won't AFAIK, but it is true that LH F is currently nothing special (though it will be soon once all planes are retrofitted)
And the FCT is an experience.  Arrange for kosher meals, do some damage to their very impressive liquor selection and ask for the Panamera to chauffeur you and it may be worth 15K miles.
Plus as he's overnighting in FRA he'll be able to just go straight to the FCT to check-in, so it's much less of a shlep that getting there when transiting.
I wouldn't be so quick to discount all that for just 15k miles.

LH will be much nicer with the new outfit but watch the availability drop tremendously.

If LH availability will drop, others will open up more.

FRA has not been my friend so far.

Arriving with a LH F, wasn't admitted in lounge, as well as, departing with a business connecting same day to a F same story.

Instead of Panamera, I get stuffed in a van, as they have people going to the same aircraft (I asked for a Panamera).

In FCT I never received a KSML.

Walking, lots of it...
