One way rental in Europe, anyone ever try?
« on: January 12, 2015, 02:14:47 PM »
I am looking to pick up the car in one country and return in another

After some research it seems no one will let you pickup in GB and return elsewhere as those cars can't be rented anywhere else (with the exception of hertz which will do it for 500 GBP charge)

I only need it for 2 days, anyone know of a way to get this at a sane price? (like $300-$400 max)

I have never been able to crack the code on this one either. The only solution I used that works if there is are two decent sized towns on both sides of the border are to return your car on one side, take a taxi or Uber across the border, and start a new rental on the other side. It used to be that one way fees were a often percentage of the rental cost so you could do a variation on that trick by doing a one day rental to cross the border in the cheapest car available then swap out anywhere in the next country to your longer term in country rental. But it seems most are fixed fees these days.

I can tell you the last time we bit the bullet and paid the one way fee they gave us their oldest, highest mileage crappiest car which had an AC that failed about 20 minutes into every drive. They knew they were passing a car off to another location and were unlikely to see it again, so they used it as an opportunity to get rid of their clunker.

Try the Lufthansa car rental portal. Have seen pretty good one way rates there.

Seems like they only support cities with an airport code.

All I found is over $1k.
1 way rentals across borders are typically prohibitive, but I have seen exceptions in Western Europe.
In the eastern and South Eastern Europe one has to be extra careful with the countries that one is allowed to drive to.
It could mean that you aren't allowed to enter a neighboring country and need circumvent it with a 12h drive etc.*
Sometimes I advise to return the car right before the border and take a taxi or other transport to cross.
Could mean huge savings.

*it can also mean that the prices are prohibitive because fewer or only 1 company allows this rental and so prices go up.

Exactly my point, which is quite reasonable.
Same for AMS.
