Starwood Account Hacked
« on: January 17, 2015, 09:29:07 PM »
PSA: Over Shabbos, someone hacked my SPG account, and changed the email address on file. I received an email to this effect.
I called SPG, and apparently this individual cleared out my account redeeming all my points for gift cards. A quick Google search tells me that I am not the only one who was hacked recently. Check your SPG account (and other loyalty accounts).

Ouch! Is SPG able to help you get the points back?
Workflowy. You won't know what you're missing until you try it.

I spoke with SPG. They said that they're opening an investigation to get back the points etc. I should hear back in 24-48 hours.
Approx 60k points.

Never shared the account info with anyone. I've probably done a total of two mileage transfers over the 5+ years I have the account, and a few hotel stay redemptions. I think it's simple fraud.

Good news update!
All resolved. Apparently their computers were hacked, and if you use your email address as your username, that allowed the hackers access to the accounts. The mailing addresses were changed to Canadian addresses and multiple gift cards were ordered.

Starwood caught the breach, cancelled those orders, refunded the points and are trying to prevent it from happening.

If you're account has been breached, or you can't log in because it's frozen, call the right department directly at: 877-782-0132

What a waste of SPG points used on GC's. I'm glad it worked out for you!

I'm assuming the hacker did GC bc he didn't need to give info vs a hotel where they'll need info but it's still sad to see hard earned SPG points not used to their full potential and wasted on GC

If you noticed they mostly got amazon and Nordstrom which is what scammers like I'm not sure why they like amazon but Nordstrom they like because you can get cash out of it by paying a drop with CC and the rest with GC and then returning and the entire refund goes on the CC
I wonder what people who type "u" instead of "you" do with all their free time.

Thanks for the warning
as a general rule don't use the link in an email go to the site directly
I know someone who nearly lost a website that he paid a few grand for because a few days after he created it he got an email about it being hacked and he should change his password, all the links on the page were legit except for the one that he was supposed to put his password into but being a vigilant man he realized it and saved himself a few grand and a big headache
I wonder what people who type "u" instead of "you" do with all their free time.
