I used an old Mio a few years ago in Israel and the nice thing about it was you could type in "kever" and it displayed every kever in Israel.  The points of interest were awesome.

When I tried a newer Mio more recently the navigation was much improved, but you had to enter a city in order to display points of interest.  So you would have to enter "Kever" and then a cty to pull up any results.

And as you mentioned english input is an absolute disaster with the craziest spellings ever, and if you don't spell the city exactly as it is programmed you just get an error message.

usually you can leave the city blank, although he asks for it, and then it will slowly find them one by one according distance.

That's exactly how it was in a Mio model that I used in 2007, but in a 2009 Mio model if you didn't enter a POI or street with a city it gave an error message.

Yup, maybe it was just a really bad model.

I figured that out eventually and that's exactly what I did as well.

Superflyer,
look back at comment #15

Hey does anyone know of a gps system that works in the u.s. and israel?

The user who posted that was "yj"

I said see "MY" original post which was:
Old topic, but i need a gps in israel. Is it worth it to rent one from the car rental? Or is there a way around that? Can maps be downloaded to a gps i have already? I have a magellan maestro...

Thanks!

Does the name "yj" and "David" look so similar? I took the option of asking my question in a current thread rather than starting a new one. It helps to look at the dates and user names...

Regardless, thank you for responding. I am going to be in Israel for 10 days and if they charge $10 a day, its probably worth it to just buy one.

Where would you recommend purchasing this Mio? And which model should i be looking for?

Do you know a model number or how much it costs?

Would the Mio MOOV 300 do just the same? i found it on amazon (used) for $80. Then i can just get the israel maps, right?

probably, but you would really need to know what you are doing !

In Israel an updated map is more crucial then anywhere else !

in that case, im probably better off buying one preloaded with israeli maps or just renting one.

Is the israel duty free shop the only way to get for cheap? i cant order one online somewhere with maps loaded?

Try a shop called space next to kikar hashabbes (on yecheskel, in a sous terrain). The boss there is called Moshe, you can say its his cousin that sent you. (The one that travels to israe constantly)

You've already gotten some great advice, I just figured I'd chime in.  I used my Mio C310x Digiwalker (bought in 2006 for $100 so you can probably find one real cheap now) and loaded the Israel maps onto it.  There's a googlepages forum on that device since it's very hackable with lots of people to help you out.

Best of luck!

I think i am going to buy one in the end...

In my searching for renting one, i found a place that has a feature on their units that routes you in a manner that you dont go through any Palestinian areas. Has anyone ever heard of this feature? seen it? know anything about it?
Does anyone know if i can download something somewhere which would do the same for me? I think im getting the mio moov 400.

thanks!

Both Mio's that I used since 2007 had options to avoid PA areas and other options like avoiding the ridiculously expensive kvish 6.

Would you remember the model numbers? Do you know if yours had those options installed specially?

Would a brand new one have those same features?

It's a standard feature for Israel GPS maps.
