Better yet will it affect the main user's credit? And the answer is somewhat. Now, to the extent that an AU gains from piggybacking (which has become less as of late) it will affect them.

I see, so if you are trying to build credit for someone it is best not to make them a AU on a card which might be cancelled in the near future

Not at all, when you apply for a card you credit takes a hit. When you use that card responsibly you close that gap pretty quickly, and it will actually be a positive on your credit file. An authorized user does not get that hit as no inquiry is made (to the best of my knowledge). Generally speaking closing a card just makes that account slowly fade away (as it is goes from a current account to a past account) although, as previously mentioned on these forums it will never totally disappear. But being that they didn't get an inquiry I don't see how it can hurt.

i opened up 2 au's with american express over the phone and they did not ask me for a ssn. when the cards arrived there was also a letter saying "we need more info fo theese cards: social security number"

can i just call in and give in 9 random numbers? or do they check to see that it matches up?

Do you specifically not want to add SSN?

then they dont have a SSN. So you cant add it. Nor should you add it even if it was a real person IMO..

just putting in random 9 numbers wont do it? or will it make them suspicious if it comes back empty?
