Car Accident Question
« on: January 20, 2015, 07:00:43 PM »
On Monday, in NJ, someone hit my car, twice, as I was pulling out of a spot. They caused paint/body damage to my rear bumper. When I went to confront them, they drove away and I got their plate. Hit and run. Called 911 and filed a police report.

I'm insured with GEICO and the only issue I had was a Safelite repair last month. I have a $1k deductible.

Is my best course of action to file a claim (hate to do that) and have them pursue using the plate number/police report?

with a 1k deductible it's probably not worth going to them and having your insurance go up and having a claim on your record
I wonder what people who type "u" instead of "you" do with all their free time.

Haven't been able to bring it in anywhere. I'd say $400-$1k, in the absence from of more concrete info.

I feel screwed here. This person hit me. They fled. And now I'm stuck with the expense.

well if you have a $1000 deductible you wont get anything from the Insurance company only if you can get the info and proof about the person that hit you.

You need to speak to the detective who was assigned this case.

can you wait to file the claim and see if they find the person who hit you first?

No point of filing otherwise.

Going to wait until I get the police report and go from there. If I have her info I'll file with her company. If not, I'll give the plate to mine and file. They can pursue.

You can file a request to find out the owner/insurance of the car who hit you. Do that and file with their insurance. But also get a copy of the police report. And speak to the detective to stay abreast of the investigation.

Didn't know I could file such a request, that's helpful. Doing the other things already. Thanks for the advice!

speak with your insurance company. they are usually upfront about things and what your options are.
my wife got hit last year and i reported it to them and we discussed the options. in the end, his insurance paid for everything so geico dropped the claim

GEICO suggested I file with the other party, if possible.
