Replace FIOS Router
« on: January 21, 2015, 11:38:41 AM »
I'm with Verizon FIOS and paying $5 + tax a month for the Actiontec router rental. I know I'm getting ripped off, but am not sure if it's difficult to swap out and how much a slightly better router would cost me.

Anyone have experience with this?
TIA

You can buy an Actiontec to avoid the monthly rental fees. You need the specific FiOS Actiontec router if you have TV service.

Just for internet. Can I use a regular router?

The Verizon FiOS Actiontec MI424WR is the cheaper one.

Sorry to bump an old thread.

Is there any real differences between these 2 routers, that would justify paying extra for the more expensive one?

AC1900 is able to handle higher speed (theoretically). Probably, you will not notice much difference. On the other hand for an extra $20 you get the later version and a router can last 5+ years.

The AC2350 is on lightening deal now for $139 https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01GPAOJJG/
If it's not free shipping it's not worth it.

took a 5 min phone call and a reboot. They mailed a box to my address to end back their router.
make sure your own router is good and secure.
