Is a 3 hour connection time between Newark and JFK possible?

I may want to change a reservation for this Sunday.
The new reservation would have me leaving Cleveland at 6 am. Land in Newark at 7:40am and then I would have an international flight from JFK at 10:40am. Is this too risky? We will be checking bags as well.

As of now we are confirmed on an economy comfort flight to SA from ATL on Delta, but would prefer business class.
It is available on SAA out of JFK, but obviously making it to SA is the priority.

We will be cabbing it. What will the airline do if I miss the flight?
If there is no direct that day, will they put me on an indirect fight with a partner?
Just want to know the what ifs

I had a manager check me on international flight 35 min before flight on AA I even checked in suitcase but it's  a big YFMV

I will try and see if they will do it for 2 pax. Will cost me more than the flights though 
1. Is there a way to get Aeroplan to book a ticket that lands in EWR and takes off from JFK? Online it doesn't seem to work.
2. I assume there is a 24hr cancellation window since it leaves from US, for award ticket 

Answers to my questions after calling Aeroplan:
1. They can book it for me over the phone as one award ticket.
2. No 24hr cancellation policy

They claim if I miss my flight from JFK to JNB all they can do it put me on the next award flight available, which could potentially be days later.
Anyone with experience with this last point with aeroplan?
