@OP -- beware that this card is NOT a chip & pin, it is a chip & sig. There's a difference.

For travel in the EU (e.g. Paris), you'll need the former, as the latter will not be sufficient to pay at kiosks, etc.

FYI - Chase does not offer any C&P cards at this time.

At the Chase luncheon, both Gary and the Chase BA rep claimed that the statement bolded above is untrue.
Anyone have personal experience with a European kiosk and a Chase C&S card?

My feeling is that they're both mistaken, unfortunately, as the kiosks in the EU require an actual PIN to be entered at the time of purchase. Be interesting to hear otherwise though.

They both claimed that that's a common misconception.
Would love to hear from anyone about personal experience though (preferably from the past couple months)

if the misconception spreads to the merchant than it may as well be real

Seems they're right after all!

http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/18773459-post19.html

And this thread:

http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/credit-card-programs/1352097-chase-visa-chip-signature-usage-report-abroad.html

And this article:

http://travel.nytimes.com/2012/06/10/travel/money-tips-for-globe-trotters.html

Quote
As I later learned, even without a PIN, a chip-and-signature card will work at most automated kiosks around the world because a signature is not required for purchases under $50. And at payment terminals used by stores and restaurants, the chip essentially tells the machine, “This card doesn’t have a PIN, so spit out a receipt for the customer to sign.”

Merchants can always do a mag swipe.

I'm glad you pointed that out... Not having a chip and signature/pin was quite annoying in Paris.

BTW if you have any C&S eligible card (BA, Hyatt, etc) you can just order a new card online and it will have the chip.

... or one could just reapply for the Hyatt card and TOFTT to see if it can be churned :P

Reminds me of the time I wanted to pay at a local pizza store with a US cc. The guy had no idea what to do with it...

Quite a few. See this spreadsheet, which may even be a bit out of date: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0Ani-u3tGk5hedGRvcE1ELVg5UmlGZk01SHZvTUMxdUE#gid=0

Basically, most chip cards now offer multiple levels of Cardholder Verification Methods (CVMs). Like the discussion above, if the preferred CVM is not available (usually Chip+Sig for US credit cards), it may fall back onto another method. And if the vendor has enabled it, it may still work with no CVM.
