Expired Driver's License
« on: January 18, 2015, 11:09:44 PM »
I am flying next week and renting a car, and I just realized that my Ohio driver's license expired last week. I am unable to get to OH in time to renew it, and the only other method is by calling to request a mail renewal packet, taking a vision test, sending back all the documentation via snail mail, and waiting a month to get a new license in the mail. There's not nearly enough time to get that all taken care of.

I'll take my passport with me so I don't have any issues getting on to the plane, but what can I do about the car rental?

nothing. Get picked up or take a taxi.
There's no way they're renting a car to someone with an expired license.
Unless they don't look at it. But then you may have other issues if anything happens
Always use an Amex, you'll thank me one day.

I would call and see if it can be expedited. Of course it will cost you. Pretty much anything can be done for a price.

Not with a government agency
I wonder what people who type "u" instead of "you" do with all their free time.

You just have to get through to the right people.
Look up email addresses for anyone in charge.

Closed for MLK Day so another day wasted. I don't think this is possible, but its certainly worth a shot.

I've rented in Israel with an expired license. Lady looked at license, looked at me and made up a date. Still don't think it would work in the states. You can try getting a letter of extension or something like that.

Question is what would happen in the case of an insurance claim, chances are it would be declined due to an expired license.

I went down that road. Came up empty.
I even had a sob story and it was in CVG where everyone is nice.

if you live in NY it's really easy to get a replacement. Go to DMV. There is a special kiosk for that. No lines, no hassle, no cash. In and out in 5 minutes or less with a temp print out of you license.

In fact if you now live in NY you are supposed to get a NYS license to replace you out of state one.
So check out the proof you need to bring and get one on the spot in a NYC DMV.

I switched my OH license for a NY license the other day and was given a temp license, but National is telling me that company policy does not allow to rent to temporary licenses. Hoping for better luck at the counter.
