Combining Revenue and Award Tickets
« on: February 02, 2015, 11:28:28 AM »
Trying to book my BIL to fly LAX-YYZ-TLV on Air Canada. there is a 2 hour connection between the flights.
The YYZ-TLV leg is available to be booked with miles, but the LAX-YYZ is not. am thinking of purchasing the LAX-YYZ on revenue, but have the following concerns:

1 - Given that he will be traveling on 2 separate itins (even tho with same carrier), will he need to go through passport check and re-check-in all over again for his YYZ-TLV flight?
2 - if the LAX-YYZ flight gets delayed, will they rebook him to the next YYZ-TLV flight?

Thank you

Dan has mentioned several times that you can ask for your luggage to be sent all the way to your final destination by showing your boarding pass.

Thanks, but i'm not worried about luggage, as he will be traveling with carry-on only. i'm concerned whether he will have to go through passport check and check-in again in YYZ as opposed to just connecting, as that can be very time consuming.

doesn't matter if it's on same itinerary or not, as long as you have boarding pass in hand

IINM, transiting Canada does not require going through customs

the concern is that there is a 2 hour layover between the flights. even a small delay will be significant if he has to go through passport check and then checkin and go the through the whole security again. i'm worried he might miss the yyz-tlv flight. he is traveling for a wedding, and landing in the day of the wedding, so if he misses that flight, good chance he won't make it on time.

well, thats the issue right? if he is traveling on a revenue ticket from LAX-YYZ, he won't have his YYZ-TLV award ticket boarding pass until he gets to YYZ.
to correct myself. maybe he can check-in online and print boarding pass?

I have a flight from ord to TXl with a 10 hour stopover till I go from TXl to tlv.
They are two seperate avios tickets.
Think I can check my bags in Chicago straight through?
Same deal as above?

Or go to a transit desk and ask for a BP, or if you are past security, go over to the gate

Thanks for all the feedback. in the end, i decided to avoid unnecessary headache, and will book him on a full revenue ticket via EWR. no apetite for him missing the connection and thus missing the wedding.
