The lowest would be coast LAX-SFO for 5k miles.

trying to book 4 seats OGG-SFO-NYC on VX & I'm getting hit with $187 in taxes,

it's a domestic itinerary yet when I look at the taxes & fees this is what I see:

Your fare includes the following taxes and fees, according to the travel you are booking:

For domestic travel within the United States:

Passenger Facility Charges of up to $9.00 each way

September 11 Security Fees of $5.60 per one-way trip, where each one-way trip may include a connection or stopover between two domestic flights not exceeding 4 hours

Domestic Segment Tax of $4.00 per domestic segment (a segment is one take-off and landing)

A U.S. government excise tax of $8.90 per departure for segments that begin in Alaska or Hawaii

US domestic transportation tax of 7.5% of the base fare for travel within the Continental United States

Whats this BS  >:( >:(

Just to clarify (since there isn't a lot on this thread):  I see award availability on Virgin America ORD-LAX for 17k RT.  If I transfer 17k MR to Virgin Atlantic, I can then call them up and book the 17k flight on Virgin America?

EDIT: So I PUTPAC'd and realize that it's about double the miles when using Atlantic ... so I guess that's why no one is overly excited about VA...

VX would go by the price of the flight, while VS would have have a standard rate. You can place a hold with VS for 24-48 hours, while you transfer miles.

Right, so you can't really get a "deal" by booking what look like deal rates on VX, since the miles requirement is higher/standard on VS, right?

I used to fly alot to and from America and London do I racked up a nice amount of Virgin Atlantic points. I've never found it worth it to use them. When flying to or from London there is a heavy tax because of Heathrow and in America it's 25k points which isn't great

Depending on the cabin you can get a bargain sometimes.

Is there a standard award chart available?  When I called VS, they quoted me random points values for the VX flights I was searching, but there wasn't an obvious way to determine in advance what it would cost.

Award chart here, all in round trip pricing although you can do one ways.
