Unable to rent two cars regardless if there are additional drivers.

National confirms they allow this and I've done this quite a few times. Which location was this?

Sidenote..You MUST be in the car physically for both rentals upon pickup. You cannot just add AU and let them try to check the car out without you being in it. I'm guessing this is where you went afoul.

Here's what I do. Pick up 1st car with AU in passenger seat next to me. Check out at the gate and drive back around to the front entrance allowing the AU to take control of the car from there. Pickup second car. Try to go to a different booth to avoid confusion. No problem the few times I've done it.

That part is obvious. They'll never allow an additional driver to pull out of the lot. I don't have personal experience with trying though.

You must be the exception to the rule, I've had personal experience with unsuccessfully taking out 2 vehicles. I've also heard quite the stories of people who tried circumventing the system by pulling out two cars.

That's a rookie mistake.

Were you able to book it and at the reservation they said no or you couldn't book it
Was able to book multiple cars. Picked up 1st car with AU in passenger seat next to me. Checked out at a national location. Drove to a second National location. Picked up second car. First location called and requested to return one of the cars because the rule is you can only get one car.

I rented two cars from the same location. Rented a minivan for the family. 2 days later needed a second car for biz trip and had no problems.

Odd. How would the first location even know the second location reservation system. You still haven't mentioned the location/locations? Wondering if they were corporate or franchised.

Other's have had success so it isn't just me. National customer service also confirmed you can have more than one car out at the same time, though I would never try more than 2 at once.

The only other thing I can think of which might be a factor is possibly insurance? I've had full insurance on the cars when I've done it.

Couple of data points.
All worked.
2 vehicles same place same day.
2 vehicles separate location different days.
2 vehicles same location different day.
With the separate location incident they made a comment to me about having a car out but still let me rent

It's not hard coded to not allow you to rent. It's up to the agent to allow you to leave the lot with another car or not.

Are you sure it's even hard coded to show up that you have a different car?

Sometime in August, National at JFK updated their underage policy to only allow economy - fullsize.

I was told about that policy from multiple agents and supervisors there for the past 2 years (and none would let me out with larger). Could be they weren't always so strict on enforcing it though.

A friend of mine was there yesteday. The gate agent didn't let him out with a nicer car. When he asked why, they told him that the computer wasn't letting due to underage, even tho it was honeywell. So either they adjusted their policy to not allow nicer cars, or they flagged honeywell totally!

Flagging Honeywell totally would facilitate blacklistment...

Maybe its coming soon. Look at state of Nevada, that corporate got so misused it was flagged for fraud, and doesn't work at all now
