Nope. You have to be there. You could add him as an additional driver, though.

Reserve it for yourself. Then call in and try and switch the name on the reservation. (I know it works for hertz, so its worth a shot)

turns out the website is wrong. all rentals are allowed into canada as long as its not a one way

I have done one-way rentals both to and from Canada many times with National as well as Alamo which is the same company.
I don't even understand what the question would be.

Yes.

You must be the exception to the rule, I've had personal experience with unsuccessfully taking out 2 vehicles. I've also heard quite the stories of people who tried circumventing the system by pulling out two cars.

I rented two cars from the same location. Rented a minivan for the family. 2 days later needed a second car for biz trip and had no problems.

As we speak here, i have 3 vehicles on my name, with AU. all taken from the same location - LGA.

Couple of data points.
All worked.
2 vehicles same place same day.
2 vehicles separate location different days.
2 vehicles same location different day.
With the separate location incident they made a comment to me about having a car out but still let me rent

It's not hard coded to not allow you to rent. It's up to the agent to allow you to leave the lot with another car or not.
