expired drivers license

my drivers license expires in march but i dont plan on being back in the states until april. anyone have experience with this? can i just renew it in april or since it would be already expired, i would have to start the process anew (permit etc.)
and no, i cant renew it online or by mail.
my situation is ca, but id still like to hear experiences from different states

(from this http://www.dmv.ca.gov/dl/dl_info.htm#RENEW it would seem i can just renew, but when dealing with bureaucracies you cant be medayek from websites)

Renewed NY State License a little under a year after expiry - no problem.

same for nj maybe you can report it lost or stolen and then they will renew it online?

i think you need 28 lessons to take the test in israel unless its dif if you already have an american license.
