All jokes aside, the moral of this thread is that you should not trust someone just because he/she/they/it is a DDFer. Investigate before you put yourself at risk. Take into consideration the number of posts and the content of those posts (and your gut feeling).

So it should be scalable. Not saying that it will be (easy) implemented but criteria for example:

Hat tips 5%
Post count 15%
positive feedback for helpful posts 30%
positive feedback for business done with 50%

Come on, you need to get more sophisticated than that! There has to be an overall-post-count-to-new-topics-started ratio!

Would the $2 trick work on this too?

Depends on your utilization that is made up of +1's-to-total post count ratio

in theory you are correct however many times people will +1000 or "+1 agreed" and there would be no way to differentiate between that and a +1 and then some important addition
I wonder what people who type "u" instead of "you" do with all their free time.

I guess the filter would have to lie wit the "+1" as that is what they all share in common. But yes, I hear your point in general.

So I'll start to +2

I booked a two room 3 night stay through a forum member's Hyatt Diamond account. I transferred alot of points to his account and gave him my credit card info. It worked out great for me as I researched the member through his posts. That is a situation that could easily end badly.

Marco Polo and chucksterace are very helpful. I am glad you mentioned them. Also ilherman. Of course, there are many people who have great content to their posts and share lots of wisdom but the above mentioned stand out as people who will spend time helping you.
+1 i never post "+1" but its a great idea to get my post count up ;) I did it this time because these guys have helped me too. They are all over the threads

contributing to the forums is important.
While I agree that contributing is important as it is the nature of a forum, I don't think that the amount that someone contributes or doesn't contribute is necessarily any indication of trustworthiness.

When you say scammed by another DDFer, do you mean its the 2nd time (or more) that you've been scammed or that you were scammed by a fellow DDFer?
