When I used to live in Montreal I used to call my local rental car office every time I had to go to NY. Many times they would have cars with American plates they had to get back across the border and they would let me take them one way for really cheap.

They aren't being too generous with the mileage, literally just enough for the trip required. I was looking at Middlebury to Orlando, they are giving 1400 miles, the two routes mapped out by google are 1)1330 2)1408.
0.32 for every additional mile.
