13 reasons why it's PERFECTLY FINE to buy price mistakes

DOT Update:

United Airlines mistaken fare

The Department of Transportation is aware of an issue involving mistaken fares on United Airlines’ Danish-facing website.  The Department's Office of Aviation Enforcement and Proceedings has begun looking into this matter, including speaking to United and reviewing consumer complaints.  That Office will gather all the relevant facts before making a determination as to whether United is or is not required to honor the mistaken fares.

To file a complaint with the DOT - http://airconsumer.dot.gov/escomplaint/es.cfm

Sample complaint:
-------------------------------------------
To Whom It May Concern,

Yesterday I purchased a flight itinerary from United Airlines via their website: United.com. The flights were booked, I was issued a 'confirmation number' and my card was charged for the full amount of the fare. A short time later United.com indicated that my itinerary was "confirmed and ticketed". I have attached a printout from United.com showing this, as well as a printout of my receipt indicating that the airfare was booked, ticketed and paid for.

Yesterday I was informed by United that they had voided my itinerary. This was done without my knowledge and without my consent.

As such, I ask that you please compel United Airlines to honor the ticket which they sold me, and to provide compensation for their grievance and the inconvenience which it caused me.

Thank you for your consideration and assistance!

Best Regards,
Yosef_S
-------------------------------------------

United is looking into an issue whereby a third-party software provider applied an incorrect exchange rate for tickets sold from the airline’s Denmark website. We have temporarily suspended sales from the Denmark website and are working to resolve the issue with the provider

We will void the bookings for those who purchased tickets as a result of a third-party currency conversion error.

Going against the DOT ruling would be a terrible PR mistake.

Even those that side with UA in this case, would be up in arms if UA ignored the DOT ruling

6 digit fine?  Ha.

If it were that easy, UA would have already paid it. In cash.

A fine could be (from the latest I read) $27,000 per violation.
As AJK said I find it seriously hard to believe that DoT would fine UA such a little amount (did someone say 6 figures lol?) -- what would be the point of having a fine if the amount was so small that it made the law impractical so that companies could just break laws and pay minimal fines?

Not all government regulations make perfect sense you know. Especially in a case where they did not maliciously screw people.  Dot may fine them for kicks but they dont deserve a whammy.

We all know what's really going to happen. Everyone's going to get an almost worthless $75 UA GC and then start selling them in Goods for Sale.

My guess is UA voided the tickets to get them off the hook for tickets outside the DOT's jurisdiction and are taking their changes with the DOT for the remainder of the tickets. I expect UA will honor tickets that the DOT pressures them to honor should this happen, but regardless of that outcome will use this glitch as an example to change the DOT regulations.

That's the maximum. Have they ever done that amount ?
Is $27,500 for any violation or only for tarmac delay ?

Forgive me if I'm totally off the mark, but if the DoT chooses to fine UA, wouldn't that money be paid to DoT directly? So I would think that DoT would WANT to find a way to hold UA at fault so that they can be the recipient of that sum? Obviously UA could just decide to honor the tickets instead, but there is a chance that DoT could be the recipient of a huge amount of penalty fines?

I'm sure that this would not be something that they make obvious or known. But when whoever at DoT is responsible for determining how they will act in this situation, is it not possible that this is something in the back of their heads?

Not how it works.

DoT doesn't necessarily see a dime of the money.

well considering no one has a crystal ball, nor is there much precedence for such a case. you cannot blame then.
this is all speculative, and pointless speculation on top of that.

Blah blah.

The regulation, as written and explained, should compel the DoT rule in the flyer's favor. Whether or not they contort themselves into a pretzel to try avoid that outcome because they "feel" bad about it is another story. But make no mistake, their feelings have (or rather should have) zero ramification on the outcome of this case.

DoT can do nothing but rule in favor and then issue civil penalties.

Whether or not UA will try and settle with the flyers via issuance of GC or miles is another thing altogether.
