13 reasons why it's PERFECTLY FINE to buy price mistakes

DOT Update:

http://www.dot.gov/airconsumer/united-airlines-mistaken-fare

United Airlines mistaken fare

The Department of Transportation is aware of an issue involving mistaken fares on United Airlines’ Danish-facing website.  The Department's Office of Aviation Enforcement and Proceedings has begun looking into this matter, including speaking to United and reviewing consumer complaints.  That Office will gather all the relevant facts before making a determination as to whether United is or is not required to honor the mistaken fares.

To file a complaint with the DOT - http://airconsumer.dot.gov/escomplaint/es.cfm

Sample complaint:
-------------------------------------------
To Whom It May Concern,

Yesterday I purchased a flight itinerary from United Airlines via their website: United.com. The flights were booked, I was issued a 'confirmation number' and my card was charged for the full amount of the fare. A short time later United.com indicated that my itinerary was "confirmed and ticketed". I have attached a printout from United.com showing this, as well as a printout of my receipt indicating that the airfare was booked, ticketed and paid for.

Yesterday I was informed by United that they had voided my itinerary. This was done without my knowledge and without my consent.

As such, I ask that you please compel United Airlines to honor the ticket which they sold me, and to provide compensation for their grievance and the inconvenience which it caused me.

Thank you for your consideration and assistance!

Best Regards,
Yosef_S

United is looking into an issue whereby a third-party software provider applied an incorrect exchange rate for tickets sold from the airline’s Denmark website. We have temporarily suspended sales from the Denmark website and are working to resolve the issue with the provider

We will void the bookings for those who purchased tickets as a result of a third-party currency conversion error.

was only a matter of time, though the new policy seems ridiculously ripe for abuse

Possibly. There are a few risks you will need to consider, including:
  • Airline might claim that expenses was not reasonable or in reliance of ticket
  • Airline may take months to refund you
  • Airline may decide to honor the ticket

I wonder if they could choose to honor a specific ticket if they don't want to reimburse the other expenses.

Why couldn't they. It is possible that this will become a manual process, taking a lot more time.

has any mistake ever been honored strictly because the Dot said they have to? was there any case where they came out and said they are not honoring and the Dot said they have to?

I'm sure many of the glitches that have been honored would not have been had the regulations not been in place. Announcing that you will not honor a fare and then being forced to back down can't be too good for PR...

Update from Israel: I'm a FT  7B'er....

I took United to court here and have a date set for July. In United's defense to my suit they completely botched up, so I really feel this might be a W for me.

Let's see what happens..... Fingers crossed!

Does anyone know if anyone actually ended up litigating this mistake anywhere?

To be honest, there wasn't much there besides for slandering me for use of bad faith and how I dare even attempt to go to court.

I did as well, find holes in their standard claim that billing address is fictitious. In fact, it is not. (I really do prefer to keep to myself the reason)
