13 reasons why it's PERFECTLY FINE to buy price mistakes

DOT Update:

http://www.dot.gov/airconsumer/united-airlines-mistaken-fare

United Airlines mistaken fare

The Department of Transportation is aware of an issue involving mistaken fares on United Airlines’ Danish-facing website.  The Department's Office of Aviation Enforcement and Proceedings has begun looking into this matter, including speaking to United and reviewing consumer complaints.  That Office will gather all the relevant facts before making a determination as to whether United is or is not required to honor the mistaken fares.

To file a complaint with the DOT - http://airconsumer.dot.gov/escomplaint/es.cfm

Sample complaint:
-------------------------------------------
To Whom It May Concern,

Yesterday I purchased a flight itinerary from United Airlines via their website: United.com. The flights were booked, I was issued a 'confirmation number' and my card was charged for the full amount of the fare. A short time later United.com indicated that my itinerary was "confirmed and ticketed". I have attached a printout from United.com showing this, as well as a printout of my receipt indicating that the airfare was booked, ticketed and paid for.

Yesterday I was informed by United that they had voided my itinerary. This was done without my knowledge and without my consent.

As such, I ask that you please compel United Airlines to honor the ticket which they sold me, and to provide compensation for their grievance and the inconvenience which it caused me.

Thank you for your consideration and assistance!

Best Regards,
Yosef_S

United is looking into an issue whereby a third-party software provider applied an incorrect exchange rate for tickets sold from the airline’s Denmark website. We have temporarily suspended sales from the Denmark website and are working to resolve the issue with the provider

We will void the bookings for those who purchased tickets as a result of a third-party currency conversion error.

Wideroe/united mistake was honored..

This is a much larger potential loss for them

Wideroe/united mistake was honored..

I was thinking that also, does this compare to that though? On that one we weren't saying we were in Norway in order to book it. If UA could somehow say that we booked it through a misrepresentation that we are Danish, maybe DOT would let them out in this case? IDK...

This is a much larger potential loss for them

Also that.

Here's the fare break down on the receipt for my LH/LX itenerary. One strong argument that the airline could make is that the air fare is displayed here in GBP and the currency exchange calculation is clearly erroneous (though I note that no GBP amount was displayed in the booking process)

Fare Breakdown
Airfare:   3,166   GBP
Equivalent Airfare:   32   DKK
U.K. Air Passenger Duty:    2
U.K. Passenger Service Charge:    1
Germany Passenger Service Charge:    128
U.S. Customs User Fee:    37
U.S. Immigration User Fee:    47
U.S. APHIS User Fee:    33
U.S. Federal Transportation Tax:    234
September 11th Security Fee:    37
Switzerland Airport Passenger/Security Charge:    135
International Surcharge:    4
U.S. Passenger Facility Charge:    30
Per Person Total:    720
   DKK
eTicket Total:    2,880
   DKK

FYI. Booked LHR->JNB. United didn't confirm yet, but it shows up on Swiss' Site.

A quick question, if I booked 2 trips with different departure dates but same return date/flight, neither is ticketed yet by united, should i call to cancel the one I don't need or is it too risky now? Will it cause a problem that we have 2 reservations for the return flight with the same names?

Anything not touching the USA will nearly certainly be cancelled by the airlines.

Firstly, yes, I'm sure they can.

Second, they can simply look at the billing address and see if it exists in DK, or in... Lakewood.

Why bring up Lakewood...

Before you know it, everyone in Lakeood will have their US accounts shut down, then they will scream that UA hates Christians.

I knew I should have added a USA leg !!! I'm hoping they honor my LHR-EWR - 6 months - FRA - EWR in UA/LH F.... fingers crossed!

AJK - Do you really think the misrepresentation argument will fly with the DOT? The fare offered has nothing to do with the address field misrepresentation IMO.

USA leg definitely help, though I'm not sure in this case it will matter, though I'd love to be proven wrong.

Obviously I don't know for sure, but I can promise you that UA and the other airlines have lawyers who charge a heck of lot more than I do looking into any way to weasel out of the ticket. That's the glaring issue.
