DOT Update:

United Airlines mistaken fare

The Department of Transportation is aware of an issue involving mistaken fares on United Airlines’ Danish-facing website.  The Department's Office of Aviation Enforcement and Proceedings has begun looking into this matter, including speaking to United and reviewing consumer complaints.  That Office will gather all the relevant facts before making a determination as to whether United is or is not required to honor the mistaken fares.

To file a complaint with the DOT - http://airconsumer.dot.gov/escomplaint/es.cfm

Sample complaint:
-------------------------------------------
To Whom It May Concern,

Yesterday I purchased a flight itinerary from United Airlines via their website: United.com. The flights were booked, I was issued a 'confirmation number' and my card was charged for the full amount of the fare. A short time later United.com indicated that my itinerary was "confirmed and ticketed". I have attached a printout from United.com showing this, as well as a printout of my receipt indicating that the airfare was booked, ticketed and paid for.

Yesterday I was informed by United that they had voided my itinerary. This was done without my knowledge and without my consent.

As such, I ask that you please compel United Airlines to honor the ticket which they sold me, and to provide compensation for their grievance and the inconvenience which it caused me.

Thank you for your consideration and assistance!

Best Regards,
Yosef_S

United is looking into an issue whereby a third-party software provider applied an incorrect exchange rate for tickets sold from the airline’s Denmark website. We have temporarily suspended sales from the Denmark website and are working to resolve the issue with the provider

We will void the bookings for those who purchased tickets as a result of a third-party currency conversion error.

United Glitch
« Reply #546 on: February 11, 2015, 03:53:28 PM »
From the Telegraph....

They even mentioned Dansdeals blog.... Here is the article:

A glitch on a US air carrier's website led to first-class transatlantic flights being sold for as little as £50 ($75).

People were quick to snap up the "bargain" flights on United Airlines' website, after the blunder was spotted by a travel blog.

If users to the website changed their host country to Denmark, it was possible to book a round-trip flight between London’s Heathrow airport and Newark’s Liberty International airport for 491 Danish kroner (about $75). The bug also allowed customers to buy cheap tickets to any US destination from Heathrow.

Passengers had to choose first class or business class.

The DansDeals blog advised people to use a card without a foreign transaction fee and to not sign into their United account.

A number of people appeared to be successful in claiming the tickets today before United Airlines spotted the mistake.

A spokesman for the airline said it was looking into the issue and had temporarily suspended sales from the airline’s Denmark website.

"United is looking into an issue whereby a third-party software provider applied an incorrect exchange rate for tickets sold from the airline’s Denmark website. We have temporarily suspended sales from the Denmark website and are working to resolve the issue with the provider."

The airline didn't say whether it would honour the tickets that had already been bought.

However, in the past the airline has allowed customers to keep cut-price flights due to glitches.

How long does it usually take for them to announce whether it will or wont be honored?

Anyone know if baggage is a problem?

If you have a long enough stopover you can always tell them at LHR that you need your suitcases (e.g. you have a meeting and need an item from the suitcase or any other reason)  and they should be able to get them for you.
