SPG cash + points

What's the deal with SPG cash + points? Some hotels have them, some don't (I know it's dependent on the management of each branch). Any way to find better availability (besides calendar view)? Any proven tips to convince a hotel to release some cash and points nights? Is it true that hotels never release these rooms more than 6 months or so in advance. any info or experience would be appreciated.

Check each day separately sometimes when checking few days together it doesn't show availability
I called them up afterwards to link the reservations

Has anyone ever been successful by calling up the manager of a branch and getting him to open up cash and points nights?
