How old is the account?
What kind of activity has been going on lately?
How's your relationship with Citi?
How deep is you credit history otherwise?
What has been going on with your credit (ie new accounts/pulls) in the last 6 months?

1. 1 month old
2. Spent 5,000 of my 8,500 credit limit in target. Paid off all but 2,000 before statement close (because my bank didn't link properly - Chase gives me a different routing number every time I ask them :-) - so got returned)
3. First Citi card that I'm primary cardholder
4. About 6 months ago I opened my first card (that I'm primary cardholder) Chase Saphire. Since then I've gotten Chase BA, Barclays USairways, Citi AA platinum, both Chase Southwest personals (2 b/m), Amex SPG and Amex PRG personals (2 b/m).
5. The Amex's are my most recent and I got them Jan 23rd.

I think the returned payment flagged your account and from there it's understood that they closed the account

It's very possible you got flagged for that reason but as you quoted from Citi "Specifically, your credit report indicates too many recently opened accounts". Meaning that the payment might have been a flag but not the underlying cause. What is the underlying cause is that you opened 8 accounts within the last 6 months and you've only had your own non AU credit history for 6 months. That's at least 3 Experian pulls (if your'e from tri state area) and even if not it's still bad for your credit report as all the new accounts within so short a time. What's your rush? The banks don't like it when a guy with very little credit starts opening up 8 accounts in such a short time. So again had you avoided the flag you might have been ok but IMO you should take a lesson to control yourself a bit more. Better safe than sorry and I fail to understand why people overdo these things. You're playing with your credit-it's not a game and as you can see you've already done yourself damage by having an account on your CR closed by bank.

Yes I guess I shouldn't rush it rather take things slower in the future. It's there a number I can call to see if they'l keep my account open?

What does a closed account do to your credit? My credit score is around 750.

How long should I wait before opening a new credit card again?

Should I be worried that they will close other accounts now as well from other banks?

I'm not familiar enough with Citi to know for sure...hopefully someone with experience can answer that for you. A closed account (by issuer) may or may not affect your score depending on who you ask but it's definitely not good got you if a manual review of your CR is ever done and it stays on your CR for a long time. How long you should wait-no ckear answer. Id say at least 3 months if not even 6. It's highly unlikely IMO that other banks will close your cards because Citi did (unless you do something they don't like either).

Thank you. Unfortunately the same issue with the linking of my bank account happened (at around the same time) with my Amex PRG so my payment got returned from there, hopefully they won't also flag me for that...

Very strange, can anyone shed some light?

I just received in the mail a few days ago a new Citi AA card stating "Congratulations on your upgrade from world to world elite with chip" this is a few weeks after I got a notice that Citi shut my account. It is the same credit card number, the only difference is in the back instead of just "world mastercard" it says "world elite mastercard". What is the explanation for this?

Is the card working? Probably just a system glitch or that you got sent that card before the other was closed down.

This so called "Upgrade" is system wide, they just changed the name of the card.

I received it on 6 + cards.

Citi gets allergic reaction from returned payments, that's probably the reason you were shut down,
Your best way (and probably only way) out is to get a letter from the funding bank that the returned payment was their error.
