Little off topic..
Do you have to cancel this card before the annual fee hits in order to avoid annual fee?  I think you can just call after the annual fee hits, right?

Not just this card, any card. Don't ever worry about the annual fee posting. After it posts, call up. Try to get it waived. If you can't get it waived, then cancel. You have at least a month (sometimes much more) to get the fee refunded.

I got the annual fee so I downgraded the card and they took off the fee
