I used 25,000 of my advantage miles to buy a roundtrip ticket for my sister on AA. Talk about major miscommunication. I booked her for this weekend and she said her plan was for next weekend. I called the advantage number at AA and voicemail said they are closed for the weekend. I was hold on AA for 1hr and 20min and finally gave up. Prior to that I left my num-they called and I immediately answer then the line was disconnected. Does anyone know if I can get these miles back and if so-how do I go about doing it?  Thanks I would appreciate any replies.

AA allows free date changes on award tickets as long as origin and destination airports remain the same.

Just call them to change the dates.

AFAIK they don't close. 800-882-8880

I don't think you can if the flight is <21 days.

They'll charge you the $75 close-in fee unless you already paid it.

I've done this 2 hours before a flight.

Sorry. Was not clear enough. I referred to what you said that you can change for free.

I finally spoke to a AA awards rep at 6pm on sat who said my only option was to pay $150 to reinstate the miles and from the $80 fee they will return $11 to my credit card. I am happy I was able to do this even though I had to pay out in order to get it done.

I don't think I understood what happened here.

Did you realize she was booked on the wrong date after the flight departed?

Are you booking her a new flight?

Because the $150 fee you paid was the cancellation/miles reinstatement fee.

As I mentioned earlier, you could have changed the dates for free (not so easy though if the departure time has passed)
