Has never worked for me. But a workaround is to buy Costco Cash cards online with VGC.  It's a hassle but works fine.

dont you have to register the VGX to your name/ss before you use it online?

Not in my experience. Have used VGC at Amazon.com and Costco.com, maybe elsewhere, without registering the VGC.
