Norway Master Thread
« on: March 02, 2015, 03:46:32 PM »
Why is there no master thread for Norway?

Planning a trip for Northern Norway in a week and a half for about a week. Around the Tromso area.

Tips? Suggestions? Anything?

There is a Scandinavia Master Thread, but I guess Norway deserves a thread of it's own.

As for tips - take a good camera and tripod (assuming you're going to try to capture the Northern Lights).

You definitely deserve points for originality (and bravery, considering the weather there now). I'm not sure exactly how to get there but close by (relatively speaking) is Svalbard which is very remote and is an authentic Arctic experience (polar night just ended February 15).

Weather there shows 35F so not that bad. Nothing can beat chicago these past couple of weeks.

Northern lights are almost over for the year. I would definitely recommend svalbard, one of the most remote areas in the world.

Northern lights are almost over for the year.

-1000

They continue year round. As long as it gets dark enough, you may see them. There's more than enough hours of solid darkness left in March.

In fact, March is slightly better than February for the NL due to better alignment with average sunspot activity.

Anyone have any tips for Svalbard? I'm working on a Norway/Iceland trip. Is it worth going? What's the best way to find cheap tickets?
I am sometimes accused of overthinking things. I am still mulling over whether that accusation has merit.

According to Maven.co.ol The Trondheim Synagogue in Trondheim, Norway is Orthodox. Has anyone ever visited there? How about for Shabbos?

Emailed them once for my old trip idea. They only had services once a month, on the last Friday I believe.

Just saw this thread now, I think I'll be monitoring it more closely going forward.

Thanks. Just emailed them. I hope they speak english..

Did you hear anything back? I'm very curious to hear details.

One thing to keep in mind is that virtually everything in Norway cost 70% more than in NY (it was more like 100% when the NOK:USD was 5:1), and certified Kosher products are hard to find.

WF added a bunch of new routes, most notably LKN-OSL and LKN-TOS. The latter means you gain an entire day on a combined Svalbard-Lofoten trip. The two other Lofoten airports got direct OSL flight as well, and one got a TOS too.

Pretty good news for Lofoten.
