I'm not so sure the parent/child analogy works here very well. However, the fact that an intelligent and sensitive person like you keeps wanting to use that analogy anyway tells me a lot about the misconceptions that surround this issue.

I guess it depends on whether we are comparing modern political entities or we are comparing civilizations. The US was founded on "Judeo-Christian" values. So who's the child and who's the parent?

The bottom line I take from this is a very helpful reminder that when we act as Israelis or Israel supporters we aren't nearly as strong as when we act as Jews. We became a people at Sinai, not at the Balfour Declaration.

I don't know what religion is, but everything has to do with Torah. There is no such thing as a secular discussion.

Then there never will be a solution only one can dream about.

Maybe your experience has been that theology is inherently impractical.

In the Prime Ministers (what a great read) he talks about how carter treated israel as an entity he could boss around and then when Begin met Reagan he said we are allies (I.e. Partners - in this together)
.  The carter aides that were still around were fuming but Reagen answered yes of course.

Don't be going crazy on me. Children do things all the time and get spanked for it. What would happen if the parent disowned the child.  :P
Back in the 70s the young state was having huge economical issues. After one disheartening cabinet meeting one of the ministers suggested that Israel start a war with America and when America will inevitably win the war they all of Israel's economic issues will become America's problem. Golda Meir didn't like the idea. She said "But what if we win? What will we do with the whole big America?" :P

My experience is that many make religion impractical. This all boils down to US/Israel are partners and allies. They both have their own interests with a common goal. If they part ways IMHO it is not the US that would have to worry.

Well, that was CM's intention, wasn't it? It seems to be a trend by now...

My intention is to stick up for the US. The current president represents the US. Take a shot at either and you are not going to like what I have to say.

I just don't understand why certain members bash the US every chance they get.

I didn't vote for him but he is my/our president. There are many threads where it is stated the US does not do enough for Israel. Just knowing that the US is on your side you would think would be enough.
