Israel car rental insurance
« on: March 12, 2015, 08:39:21 PM »
Ok so I searched for this and can't find a thread for it. I'm not very familiar with the finer details of car rental insurance (except which card to put rentals on, but not why). A friend of mine was told in TLV by Enterprise that he must buy insurance ($200 total) even if he's covered through his United MPE card and that all rental agencies enforce this. Is this true or not?

Anybody have anything to say? Israel rental cars aren't exactly rarities some people have to have some experience.

There are 2 separate coverages that are mandatory in Israel one is covered by cc one is not. Having a mental block on the names of coverage. If I remember I'll post.

From my research, Dan has written about it a number of times. I can't find the long post, but I found this one that explains the CDW (the one your credit card may cover if you have the right card) and the liability coverage that you have to pay.

AJ3042, I think this post from Dan might help you. Looks like most people call ahead to their credit card to get a letter. I recall reading comment on other posts Dan's done and in the DDF here about people having hassles w/o this magic letter. See if this helps you out - http://www.dansdeals.com/archives/35857

Thanks to all. And I'm not sure what the $200 charge was-given that I didn't clearly get the whole sugya of CDW vs liability. The way I understand it now from DDMS, you can get away without paying CDW but not liability-so everyone renting there is paying something, either for both or just one (liability). Is this correct?

Yup
Is there a big difference between paying for one and paying for both? Like are they equally expensive or one more than the other?

Ask a car rental company or broker. You'll get, you know, the actual costs instead of the abstractions you'll get by asking here. :)

I recently traveled to Israel and rented a car through a broker instead of online and saved approx 50% versus what I was quoted online. And she included liability in the rate. Chase freedom/sapphire/ink covers CDW in Israel. Amex does NOT.
