Don't think it would be relevant for me anyways, as I don't have auto insurance in the US.

Still would need to verify if they'll cover when all you're paying is facility fee and not for the rental.

Amex as long as there is some charge will cover, though I think its only for the premium protection.

Premium protection with Amex becomes primary and also covers even if just some charges are billed on the card.

If you rent at a HLE without any fees you can always pay for 1 gallon of gas on your return to activate the protection and if no damage then no charge as your rental comes out to $0.

Though that means coughing up an extra $20.

I guess the way to go is to use coupons and then switch to amex if needed.
