Only reason I wouldn't splurge on 7 speed is because if you do start biking ( and you should

then this may not be the best bike for you and you may rather want to put the money into a different bicycle.

I'd invest in a different seat. But that's me. Usually the first thing I change on a new bike.

Didn't know it was extra. You need different gears depending on how fast you peddle. Some don't like to get off their bike to cross the street. You want a low gear for that. Basically it is just like a car with manual transmission. Have you ever seen/heard one of those?

I would go with the three speed. These bikes sure are expensive.

To be honest with the 100 upgrade I don't even know if this bike is worth 100.

I'd prefer the 3 speed Runabout.
Though if you're getting one for your other half as well she may prefer the Catalina for its Tznius factor

Here's pretty much all you need to know about shifting gears:
•If you're going uphill and it's too difficult, shift down.
•If your legs are spinning the pedals way too fast (it's too "easy") then shift up.
