I'm curious, what grounds does a cable company have to charge $99 to watch a single match?
Supply and demand.

There's a restaurant in Manhattan that makes a chocolate sundae that costs $25,000. What grounds do they have? What grounds do they need?!

I'm not asking what legal grounds they have, as they can do whatever the hell they want. I'm asking what reasonable grounds do they have for this.

The restaurant in Manhattan is not a mainstream restaurant, just like the Apple Watch Edition is not for everyone. A hotly anticipated boxing match is something that is not reserved for special individuals, thus my question.

I see.. In that case why don't they do the same for the Superbowl?

If the SB was only on PPV my guess is it would be expensive.

We paid 90 for the fight, last fight I'm paying towards in a long time, I personally don't think that the fight lived up to the 5 years of hype... I won't feel bad for the boxing industry when/if it goes under.

Imagine the uproar that there would be if the NFL decided to make the super bowl ppv next year.

Though I'm not saying that it's wrong what they did.

You crack me up! A $25,000 sundae isn't for everybody. An Apple Watch isn't for everybody. But Mayweather v Pacquaio is for EVERYBODY! ;D That's like charging 10 dollars for a bottle of water during a blackout!  ;D

Listen, an indulgence is an indulgence is an indulgence. There's no "FAIR" price for a taaveh. It costs whatever the sellers want to charge for it. Ironic, because you were so upset on another thread that people were mad at the check cashing places in the ghetto for "preying" on the community. (Or do I have you mistaken with another poster? If so, I apologize.)

Which part didn't you understand? Which part is "cracking you up"?

A hotly contested boxing match is something millions of REGULAR people want to watch. A $25,000 sundae is for very rich people who feel good dropping 25k on a dessert. Let me be clear, nobody is ENTITLED to watch the game, just like nobody is ENTITLED to gas for their car. But they are, nontheless, products that people want.

Are you seriously equating COMPLAINING about a product being overpriced to actually burning down a business? What are you snorting?

ummmm,
considering there were likely more than 3 million buys I think that the number was no more than the market demanded. If you count the number of bars, parties etc. you can easily get to 30 million people watching it.

It's called capitalism. Same reason redcards go for $20 on the GFS board when the sellers pay $1 plus gas for them.

Sorry to be irreverent about such a serious topic. Why does it bother you that the promoters charged 100 bucks for the pay per view but it doesn't bother you that there is a dessert that costs $25,000? For the right price, you can have Manny Pacquiao spoonfeed you the worlds most expensive sundae and Floyd Mayweather will wipe your face with a moist towlette when you're done.

As William Randolph Hearst said, a pleasure is worth whatever somebody is willing to pay for it,

They charged $99 because that's the number they felt will make them the most money.

Plain and simple.

The NFL has Billion (yes with a B) Dollar contracts with the networks. They're making much more money than if the SB were on PPV.

The NFL networks also want as many people to watch the commercials.
Boxing has no time for commercials so PPV has to be the natural method of choice.

There would be ways to put in advertisements if they wanted.

I'm not a boxing fan, but to me it looked like a highly skilled, calculated, and well fought fight.
It's probably like calling a World Series game 7 underwhelming because you won't get to watch 12 home runs. Did you expect one of them to get knocked out in the 3rd round?
Plenty of experts saying it was underwhelming.

Plus me. I'm a UFC guy, but tuned in because it was supposed to be a big deal. Sorry, it was pretty lame. It's like the ufc fights where neither side does much, and one guy goes for a takedown at the end of the round to score and win the round. Aiming to score points rather than finish will result in a lame fight.

To me the defensiveness of the match is a problem with the sport.
I'm guessing to boxing fans this is typical boxing.
