The problem is when something positive happens we have no problem giving credit to religion. When something negative happens the standard answer is we are not capable of understanding. Can't have it both ways.

I don't think we "credit" religion.  We believe that we cannot understand God's ways, whether the outcome appears good or bad.

"Hot plates are typically used during the Sabbath, something Assemblyman Dov Hikind said the Jewish community should reconsider for safety reasons.
“My daughter. she has six children. I was waiting for the Sabbath to be over so I could call her and tell her, ‘don’t use the hot plate again. I want to talk to you about it,'” Hikind said."

Are hotplates a serious danger, aren't they meant to be left on for a long period of time? Is he overreacting? Or should we stop using them?

some hotplates that are imported from Israel and from other countries are not UL listed and are therefore less safe when left on for 25 hours straight. Depends on product, brand, usage, and if surrounding area is clear.

...and the answer is?  ;)

I think we answer that "ya'arich yomim" is for oilam haba, also I seem to remember something about that he was "מהרהר בעבודה זרה"
But it sounds a little off, might be a different story

There's some major confusion going on here. All humans, from the most religious to the biggest atheist, are programmed to believe the world is just. For this reason, when something good happens to someone good (or something bad happens to someone bad) we don't seek explanation, to the contrary, these stories give everyone (believers and not) a good feeling.

It's when the opposite occurs, when bad things happen to good people (or good things happen to bad people), that our brains go haywire in order to try and explain it. A religious person will look to religion for explanation while a non-believer will chalk it up to the random nature of the world.

Is there a reason to get more than one dual detector for the kitchen?

IINM they recommend one on each floor

Worth posting something like this: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00PC5S0PA/?tag=cl03f-20
With quotes from here: http://www.nfpa.org/safety-information/for-consumers/fire-and-safety-equipment/smoke-alarms
Or not worth the inevitable backlash?

http://www.nfpa.org/safety-information/for-consumers/fire-and-safety-equipment/smoke-alarms/ionization-vs-photoelectric

Quote from: from Amazon description
This alarm uses ionization-sensing technology for the smoke alarm. Ionization-sensing alarms may detect invisible fire particles (associated with flaming fires) sooner than photoelectric alarms. Photoelectric-sensing alarms may detect visible particles (associated with smoldering fires) sooner than ionization alarms. Kidde strongly recommends that both ionization and photoelectric smoke alarms be installed to help ensure maximum detection of the various types of fire that can occur within the home.

Is there a reason to get more than one dual detector for the kitchen?
Quote from: NFPA
A.11.8.3 Are More Smoke Alarms Desirable? The required number of Smoke Alarms might not provide reliable early warning protection for those areas separated by a door from the areas protected by the required Smoke Alarms. For this reason, it is recommended that the householder consider the use of additional Smoke Alarms for those areas for increased protection. The additional areas include the basement, bedrooms, dining room, furnace room, utility room, and hallways not protected by the required Smoke Alarms. The installation of Smoke Alarms in kitchens, unfinished attics, or garages is not normally recommended, as these locations occasionally experience conditions that can result in improper operation."

Correct, NO building code anywhere calls for a fire detector in a kitchen.

IINM they recommend one on each floor
1.Outside of each separate dwelling unit sleeping area in the immediate vicinity of the bedroom(s).
2.On every level of a dwelling unit including basements.

Dual smoke or dual smoke/Co?
Smoke detectors have 2 technologies, photoelectric and ionization.
