sounds slightly torturous. Will you warn them in advance?  (before they go to sleep?)
Just be there and let them know it was a false alarm. Praise them for getting up and knowing what to do.
I just found a new supply of forks!

Just tried the smoke alarm test... 3 year old (who is the lighter sleeper) woke up from the noise and then just rolled over and went right back to sleep. I was standing at his door with the door open. Normally the door would be closed and he would probably not hear it.

My 7 year old was awake still (I thought he was sleeping) and when I went to his room to test him, he asked me what was that noise. So he heard the smoke detector (he didn't know that we were doing a test) and didn't even come out of his room. When I asked him what he should do when he hears a smoke detector and he said he should come look for us (wrong answer!).

My wife and I were both shocked to see the reaction of both the kids and need to do a fire safety drill with them in the house.

Also going to test my wife tonight to see if an adult would sleep through a smoke detector.

Someone should test you. Seriously.
What do you plan on doing about the kids?

When I was a kid - even when I woke up from an alarm in the house - I would roll back to sleep, thinking Mommy burnt something again, and I was right  :)
So even a talking fire alarm would have that problem.

(I guess you can make a strict rule, that everytime the alarm rings everyone has to leave the house until an adult give the all clear)

That's a separate problem (the boy that cried wolf). If you get too many false alarms you should probably just move the alarm farther from the kitchen (or stop burning so many things :) ). You don't want to get too used to hearing the alarm go off.

Just a thought I had: if health insurance companies pay for preventative medicine (annual check-ups, vaccinations etc.) figuring that it will save them money in the long run, wouldn't it stand to reason that home insurance companies should pay (or subsidize) fire alarms?

they do. they give you a discount if you have one.

I guess they could just charge everyone more and give out smoke detectors.
