also, we have one of those "fire-ladders" that can be put out of a second floor window to get to the ground -- but it will only work if we practice using them...

While you are at it, why not install automatic sprinklers in every room?

My point is, there is a reasonable amount of precautions to take in the event of a fire. Ladders are an unreasonable precaution. Good, working fire detectors, multiple exits in and out of the house, and taking precautions with day to day use of appliances, candles etc. should be enough.

I wouldn't say ladders are an UNREASONABLE precaution.

By unreasonable, I mean impractical. I never heard a fire department recommend a ladder.

not to mention

Didn't say they were running out to buy one.  That being said, how are people living on the 3rd floor supposed to get out?

They will tell you to have at least two exit routes. On multiple story buildings stairways will be one and what is the second route?

Jumping. There - don't need a ladder.

The articles say that the mother and surviving daughter jumped from the second story window to escape the fire. Seems that in this case a ladder would have been pretty reasonable.

Multiple story buildings either have a fire escape or a sprinkler system. At least that is the law in NYC.

Most 2 story residential houses do not have fire escapes.

Commercial, and residential condominiums. Homes are typically one flight down to ground level, two exits should be sufficient. I don't know what the laws are with larger homes.

I have two stairways leading out of my house. One at the front, and one at the side.
