Forgotten Social Security Number
« on: March 30, 2015, 03:42:46 PM »
Hey DDFers,

My wife is American but hasn't lived there and hasn't used her Social Security number since she was a kid. Her parents don't remember it and she never knew it.

What's the quickest and easiest way to recover it in your experience?

Find your local Social Security Services office, look it up in the phone book or something. Then just walk in and you will have to wait in line, be prepared for a looong wait. They'll ask you for some papers usually - like your birth certificate and photo ID, and if yor name changed you might need your marriage license. They'll print you up a temporary card if you ask them to and then they'll mail you your real card. You'll still have your number that day though.

I actually went once, and there was no line at all! I guess it depends on the day.

It does, but usually it's almost the same as the DMV.
