I still don't get why people think Hilton points are so useless. I looked at the charts and category 1 starts at 5k.. Am I missing something?
Compared to other chains, the higher tier hotels are expensive (in points). For lower end hotels, which are often 3 star or lower Hilton points can indeed be useful. But then you aren't getting that much value for your points. As Dan always says the biggest bang for your buck in the points world is for aspirational products, which would often be otherwise out of reach for most people in this game.
In this regard, Hilton points generally fall short.
There are exceptions and sometimes you can find great deals based on how hotels are categorized. An example might be Doubletree Kuala Lumpur. It's not the Ritz Carlton, but for 10,000 Hhonors points it's a good deal.
