Check these these settings to make sure they stayed the same.
Spam:
Settings –> General -> Signature [double check nothing has changed]
Settings –> General -> Vacation Responder [be sure it hasn't been turned on]
Hijacking:
Settings –> Accounts and Import –> Send Mail As [make sure this is your correct address]
Settings –> Filters [you don't want filters that delete mail]
Settings –> Forwarding and POP/IMAP –> Forwarding [disabled or whatever address you assigned]
Settings –> Forwarding and POP/IMAP –> POP Download [disabled]
Settings –> Forwarding and POP/IMAP –> IMAP Access [disabled]

Gmail also has a feature that monitors the activity in your account. From your inbox, scroll down to the bottom, just below where your account storage is displayed. It now says “Last account activity” and a time, as well as an IP address (hopefully yours). If you click on the “details” button you will see all recent account activity, including IP addresses and methods of entry – browsers, POP3, etc.

Maybe an app you've authorized access to your gmail account, go through your app permissions, regardless opting for 2step verification is always recommended

I'm sorry,   there's nothing to do but damage control.  I once had a conversation with someone who had hacked into a friend's account,  while he was posturing as my friend.  Had to log him out and quickly change password.
Creepiest thing,

If you have any bank accounts that use your email address, you might want to change your password / make sure that your logins weren't changed.
Workflowy. You won't know what you're missing until you try it.

Do you use any security software on your computer?
I am sometimes accused of overthinking things. I am still mulling over whether that accusation has merit.
