I actually prefer using the phone for airline troubles sometimes especially because many times they are long drawn out stories.

Its just a matter of which department they work in...Customer Relations deals with complaints,compliments,and fallout from irregular operations after the fact,it doesn't  handle reservations.

DL did this a while ago.
It's terrible.
There is no 1 to talk to. Your only option is to write. Not everyone can write well and speech is dramatic. Plus when I was stuck at DFW after warning them about the issue before hand there was no one to talk to. All reps on phone and airport said that all complaints have to be in written form.

AFAIK United doesn't take calls to its Customer Care Dept. You have to fill out an online form.

Elites are a different group. If they send a written complain, someone from AA will pick up the phone and reach out to them.
