read the piece. As much as I agree that it's better these articles don't get published since it certainly highlights aspects of our community that are less than ideal, I think the writer did a fairly reasonable job at giving an honest take of what's going on. Not sure what puretz wants with all this and he deserves the hate, but TRD and the author were okay.

All people named in article either live in NY or moved to Lakewood after already committing fraud.
Pity Lakewood gets the rap.
this is just factually incorrect. Some of them yes but certainly not all.

If you think this is about "getting the rap," you're in the wrong thread.

Still a long way to go in this cycle. Hearing of guys with close to a decade of track record who basically have stopped paying vendors. Another with thousands of units who almost can’t put bread on the table. In hindsight, being in the right place at the right time can make one look like the world’s greatest investor. Extend and pretend is starting to run out of runway unless rates come down significantly really soon.

not being able to pay vendors might be unfortunate, not necessarily bad business

Absolutely. I think he is prioritizing essential cash flow which he needs to. This goes back to due diligence and the risk over leveraging up back when investors first signed on.

Isn't "not paying vendors" SOP for the industry?

This has probably been addressed and I am sure there is no one right answer, but the other day I had a two meshulachim stop by. Female spoke Hebrew & English, the male only Hebrew. In hindsight, the stories seemed disjointed... Female was "collecting for her wedding" (seemed a bit older for that, tbh), and the other for his family (he had lost 2 of his kids, and his father need help). I am decent with Hebrew, but those crumpled pamphlets of legitimacy feel impossible to read under the gun. I gave them some money, and after they left my sister expressed her skepticism (based on looks and feels alone). I checked later, and the charge was from TOIREM.ORG - I am guessing TOIREM is the tzeddaka processing agent.

I'd love to hear how you decide who to give to and who to decline? And how do you go about declining?

This is totally not related to this thread, this belong in one of the tzedaka threads, I don't know which one specifically, but I found this one https://forums.dansdeals.com/index.php?topic=74655.0 so I'll copy it there and respond to it there.

If they're collecting for themselves or another individual, it is almost always through an organization.
I just give. I assume that 99% of the time it's real. It's not worth the effort or potential embarrassment of a meshulach for the 1% who may be fake. G-d will make it all work out in the end.

I need to have this mindset like mentally and emotionally. I I'm like that but I'm skeptical of tapping my credit card everywhere and I don't usually carry cash.

I firmly believe כל הפושט יד נותנים לו

We were just discussing this in the other thread but the real thing that really pisses me up is that I get spammed endlessly.

I guess I need to use a burner email etc just frustrating

Kol haposhet yad is specifically on Purim. The implication is that the rest of the year one is responsible to do due diligence.

Hashem will take care of those sinners who fraudulently steal tzedaka funds. However, it is still your responsibility to try and ensure that doesn't happen. A form of Divine punishment is when one gives tzedaka to those who don't deserve it, implying that he loses out on the mitzva of giving tzedaka.
בבא קמא טז: אמר ירמיה לפני הקדוש ברוך הוא: רבונו של עולם, אפילו בשעה שעושין צדקה, הכשילם בבני אדם שאינן מהוגנים, כדי שלא יקבלו עליהן שכר

Perhaps more importantly, unless one has unlimited tzedaka funds, by giving to fraudulent collectors, one is 'stealing' from bona fide tzedaka causes.

It may be that practically speaking the correct approach is to give a small amount to everyone, but passing the buck (pun intended) and absolving oneself of responsibility is not.
