The math don't lie.
The waiters need to be there even when customers aren't.

I think it's ridiculous, I just paid $150 for a meal, you add a mandatory 18% gratuity because there were 10 people and I should still have to add another 15-20%? Let's assume everyone spent the same amount, the meal took 2 hours, and the gratuity was split between 4 waiters, that's still $33/hr on top of whatever the restaurant pays them. Are you trying to tell me a waiter deserves $60 an hour to serve a table of 10, split with 3 other waiters?
That 18% is the tip.  You don't tip again!

gratuity

noun
noun: gratuity; plural noun: gratuities
a tip given to a waiter, taxicab driver, etc.
synonyms:   tip, gift, present, donation, reward, handout;

I know what the word gratuity means, that wasn't the point, they still put the regular tipping options on your receipt implying that you're still supposed to tip.

I'm not sure if that's what he intended, but he supported your point.

I'm not tipping for the waiters to be there when I'm not, that's just one of the business owners costs which goes into the price he charges for his dishes.

The receipt format is programmed into the machine.  The 'tip' line comes up automatically, even when one of the item lines is 18% gratuity.  You  are supposed to leave it blank.

That is simply not true. Waiters make those money of tips.

+1 most waiters don't even get paid minimum wage. And a portion of their tips are split between other staff also (i.e. bussers, bartenders, hosts etc.).

Do you also order every item on the menu because "the option is there, implying you are supposed to"?

That option is there for takeout also when you clearly don't have to tip. It's just the format, or for people like you who may think they need to tip twice ;)

First of all, this isn't always the case. Secondly, my tipping has nothing to do with my waiters income. I don't care if he's Bill Gates, or a homeless dude. If the service is worth tipping, I tip(well) otherwise, he can starve with his children, and think about how to be a better waiter next time. I hate this preconceived notion (which may not have been your point) that if the service isn't good, and it's the chefs fault, or someone else's fault, you still tip the waiter. The tip is at your discretion, not to be added automatically. I've had places add a tip to my total, when the food, and the service were an utter disgrace. I simply deducted the tip and left cash.

What about if they already added 18% gratuity to your bill, do you still tip?
No and I hate when they do that.

In the old days when the gas attendant clean your windshield and checked your oil. Nowadays where having a attendant is more of a burden than a luxury. I remember when I was a kid everyone tipped the attendant.
No one ever tipped in the old days by me. They did those extra things to earn your business.

Glad I'm not the only one. Very often, they lose out, because when I tip it's always over 18%
