If a religious Jew served on a jury would they be able decide on the facts of the case even if it went against the Torah? I hope no one takes this the wrong way. Some Catholics would not be able to decide just on the facts. Their religious beliefs would take over.
we would judge based on law of land see link below please note as any lawyer would say depending on facts of the case it depends https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dina_d%27malkhuta_dina
Thanks but: This general principle is subject, however, to the qualifications that the government enacting the law must be one which is recognized by Jewish law as having legitimacy; the law must apply equitably to all the inhabitants, Jewish and non-Jewish alike; and the law must not contravene the spirit of the laws derived from the Torah even if a particular regulation may be contrary to a provision of Jewish law.

Why does this thread, out of so many DDF threads, have the rare feature of a period (full stop in the Queen's English, IINM) at the end of the title?
Been discussed before
Could you give a practical example?
(On a side note, most religious Jews with a bit of common sense would figure out how to avoid being picked for such a jury).
here’s the question I asked my rav (rabbi stein from 5towns for those who want to know): If a yid is on jury duty, is he allowed to side with a secular law or concept when it’s against the torah/ Halacha in some way? His answer: no@CountValentine
This is what I assume.
Link?
Why does the title of the "Random questions" thread have a period?
Random posts thread title has no periodRandom questions thread title has a period. Why?
to be honest I initially assumed like what @yeshivabucher said , but I did what I should do and asked my LOR
Note that simultaneous with Fishy's above post, he put an identical one on the "Random posts" thread, but without the word "why" at the end.
After dizzly swaying back and forth I think I figured it out! It's the same reason the second word is capitalized in the Random Posts thread vs the Random questions. thread. But who really knows when it's the meshugener vs ChaimMoskowitz
Probably could but won't as we know what will happen. Just asking in general. Why?
Are you asking why would a religious Jew make sure not to get picked for a jury where secular law might go against Halacha? There's a Jewish expression that says "וואס דארף מען לייגן א געזונטע קאפ אין א קראנקן בעט?" - why rest a healthy head in a sick bed? If a complicated situation is easily avoidable altogether, why not just avoid the situation rather than get into it and face the complications?
Yes to the first question. If the Torah allows you to decide on secular law when being on jury duty I see no issue. From the answers I have been getting it seems that is not the case. Then of course they should avoid jury duty. If they can't decide the case on secular law I can't see them ever being picked for jury duty.
