Rented a car today for 3 hours in CLE. Drove 13 miles total for the day. Booked through Priceline. Drove the car off the lot with a Full tank and returned with a Full tank. Somehow they clocked me out at 30.9 gallons and returned at 29.9 gallons.
1. How the heck can they know how many gallons are in the tank?
2. How am I supposed to know how many gallons are in it?
3. They charged a minimum Fuel Service Charge of $15.99 and I ended up with a $35+ charge for allegedly bringing it back 1 gallon below full.

I think this is a racket they are running for those people that dont prepay for gas. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.  >:(

If you have a receipt that shows that you filled up right before returning, it might help you fight it

The car has better gas mileage than 13 miles a gallon. Its a scam.

Email them and show them what's going on.

I had success with gas charges at random rental companies, all by making a claim by email.

Sent tweet. Will try that too.

Im just trying to figure out how they measure gas in the tank. I returned the car and got a receipt printed on the spot. Guy never looked into car other than to see gas gauge.

In theory they might've just assumed that the tank was completely full when you took it (bad assumption) and then just billed you for however many gallons they put in until it clicked off as full. That way they have a number even if the gauge read full all the way through

The guy had a handheld scanner and printer. He checked me in in under a minute printed the receipt and i then parked where he told me to park. He didnt fill anything. The charge was already processed. They also tried to scam me with a $15 upgraded car charge when they gave me tbe exact car i paid for on priceline.

I think this is very plausible.

They handed me the receipt when i pulled in the lot. When did they measure? Read what I wrote. They didnt send me a bill later. This happened at the time that i returned the car. Do rental agencies have sensors installed to measure gallons of gas in the car?

Oh and to top it off...the car only holds 26 gallons. 2019 GMC Yukon. Theyre just thieves.
