i picked up 5 pounds of Matza for $1.99 at the local grocery. It even had HEBREW letters on it. I think it was from a chabura in Israel

Was it blessed by a rabbi on site or did it come pre-blessed?

There are some Machine Matzos that have "Chomets - not for Passover use" printed on the box.

I'm always startled those matzos get a hashgacha, I'm sure many people inadvertently buy them for pesach

Around 1916/17 (I think) the Joint Distribution Committee sent tons of machine matzah to Russia. The Rebbe Rashab was in Rostov at that time and so was the yeshiva Tomchei Temimim. The yeshiva obviously did not use the machine matzah on Pesach but did serve it AFTER Pesach. Some bochurim wouldn't eat it though because of "chametz sh'aver alav haPesach." When the Rebbe Rashab heard this he was upset and said matzah with which thousands of Jews were mekayim mitzvas matzah is not chametz.

Having said that... I don't eat machine matzah not at the seder and not all eight days. But that's different than calling it chametz. I also wouldn't eat Manischewitz macaroons.

What would the issue with machine shmurah be? I understand the lishmah issue, but why would it be any more likely to be chometz? If anything I'd assume machines can be more efficient than humans?

What is the basis for only eating matzah made l'shma?  I too only eat matzah made l'shma to be mikayem the mitzvah of achila (which occurs at the seder).  But to say that because I'm in the mood for a matzah sandwich on Wednesday of chol hamoed, the matzah needs to be made l'shma doesn't make any sense to me.  There is no mitzvah being performed; so, as long as the machine matzot are not chamaitz, AND THEY ARE NOT, what could possibly be the issue with eating them?

I don't think anyone on this thread decided on their own that Machine Matzah is Chametz. The Divrei Chaim is famously quoted as saying something along those lines.

While it isn't up to me, if it is true that Machine Matzah is more reliable Chametz-wise, I would choose to be sure about the D'Oraysah of Chametz.

The "velt" says in the name of the Tzanzer Rav that it is chametz gamur. In fact, he (or maybe it was the Klauzenburg Rav based on this ruling) preferred the use of machine matzos over bread for the 10 crumbs distributed during bedikas chametz as this is for sure chametz, whereas bread is not difinitely chametz.

I believe it was the 5th Chabad Rebbe (the RaSha"B) who said that every piece of Matzah we eat on the eight days of Pesach, we are eating Emunah!
