Why not back it up to your outlook, and then sync it to your bberry?

Yeah, outlook (or csv) is definitely the way to go.

If I have the numbers already saved in my palm desktop application, is there any way I could export those numbers from palm desktop to outlook?

Use blackberry desktop to import your palm contacts to outlook. If your not sure how to do it either Google it or call your current cell phone company and ask for Blackberry support

funambol.
Free open-source over the air sync solution, sort of like an el cheapo Exchange Server, or BES.
Basically, install the client on one phone, all your pim is pushed to the server. Install the client on another phone, all your pim is pushed to the new phone.
What's great about this is that you can keep two totally different devices in sync if you ever switch back, or if you're like me and swap handsets on a whim, but want all your stuff in sync on everything.
