Just a couple of thoughts...

Even though its Halachicly okay it just doesn't feel Shabbosdik, and that may be because you grow up knowing you don't touch a switch on Shabbos but fact is thats how it feels.

Another issue is that it can very easily confuse kids who might start using all switches or cause a laxity regarding other light switches.

Lastly it can be an issue with Ma'ars Eyin although generally whoever sees you doing it will probably be around you so you'll be able to explain it.

Shabbos timers weren't shabbosdik once upon a time either.
And the way he went about it makes me hope that it is a success. The correct way to wade through the dangerous waters of religious innovation.

Also, repost!

I know but with a Shabbos timer after everything said and done it goes automatically, before electricity the candle used to eventually burn out as well here you are physically doing something...

I agree, its definitely quite evident that he did a lot of research/is very knowledgeable in Halacha and respects Da'as Torah very much.

Aha! I was wondering where I saw it...

Wow great call, it's actually interesting cause that's one of the things that you still have people who completely won't carry, I.e. Growing up without it.

It's actually a conversation and idea I've had many times before.  This idea of not using things that are 100% permissible because of the idea of it not "feeling" like Shabbos. And then what is my Shabbos really?

Makes for some interesting thought.

And while I love the idea of technology advancing I hope in 100+ years we don't have people driving around and using their cell phones Shabbos somehow.

FYI from everything I've heard and from electricians I've spoken to the fire from the hot plate had nothing to do with the fact that it was a hot plate or that it was plugged in too long. That isn't to say that as Jews we don't sometimes use items in a way not recommended by the manufacturer. Most crock-pots for example are not meant to be used longer than X amount of hours etc.

Seems to me this is like the guy with the shoe bomb and how we all have to take off our shoes at the airport now.
