How old? As long as she knows how to roll over on her own you have no problem..

2 boys.
One slept on his back.
One slept on his stomach.
The one that slept on his stomach was super colic. Doctor said is was 100% ok.
then again ask your local Dr.

These things change every few years.

All the toys I played with as a kid are now banned as deadly and illegal. Yet I somehow survived.

The crib my 12 year old used is now considered a death trap but BH she made it.

IMHO you can't make yourself crazy about these things.

Regardless of all the precautions you take today, your kids are not going to believe how recklessly they were raised.

The difference regarding SIDS is negligible, whether the parents smoke has a much greater effect...

With My first kid, we were typical first time parents and followed all the "rules". She was a horrible sleeper until 2.
With my second we gave her a pacifier and let her sleep on her belie from the beginning and she is a much better sleeper.

Back is safer and that is what a parent needs to know. So ask yourself as a parent are you going to do what's best for your child or more convenient for you.

Did you put your kids in a car? Way more babies die in car crashes than while sleeping on their backs...

And FTR babies sleep for their own good, not just their parents' convenience..

I am very surprised at the position your taking (no pun intended)

Compared with back sleeping, stomach sleeping carries between 1.7 and 12.9 times the risk of SIDS

Prone sleeping has been recognized as a major risk factor for SIDS, with odds ratios ranging from 1.7 to 12.9 in various well designed epidemiologic studies.
I can quote the sources to that one, but you get the point.

All my kids slept stomach. if you put them on back they dont sleep as well . ask your mother , grandmother etc.
That is a PERFECT example of a bubba maeseh!!

To the ops original question, once your child rolls over on their own then they are OK on their stomach.

The position I'm taking is based on this line of reasoning...

That is actually my usual approach to risk management; if it's not as dangerous as driving to the grocery, and more inconvenient than walking there I pretty much ignore it...

You wear a seat belt? Tiny risk of a crash so why bother?

I agree to all your points except for the last one... That definitely depends on the kid... However (and this goes to the whole discussion) you can buy the breathing Alarms and then you can get the best of both worlds....

Do they market these saying it is OK for your baby to sleep on their stomach?
