United to El Al Interline Baggage agreement

If I am flying from Newark to Europe on United, and then continuing to Israel on El Al on a separate ticket, can I check my bags all the way through at Newark? Do I have to pick them up in Europe and check them in at the El Al counter? I have heard conflicting answers from the airlines.

In my experience, needed to recheck bags in ATH. YMMV

I did this itinerary yesterday and today and I had to retrieve my bags in Athens and recheck them. But the guy sitting next to me was traveling on a united ticket, and he was continuing on El Al, and he did not apparently have to pick up his bags and I have no idea how he did that
