Earning mileage: Infants (who don't pay for a full ticket) are not eligible to earn miles.

Luggage: Some people report that their friend or parent flew and got lucky. However, it's best to check with the Airline (on their website or calling them), BEFORE packing your suitcases. Here are some helpful links, plus a summary of baggage allowed for lap infants.
Child paying 10% of fare can check a small suitecase up to 10kg/20lb. Child paying 50%+ of adult fare can check standard baggage allowance (one full size suitcase 23kg/50lb) both are +stroller and car seat. One carry on + booster or infant seat + pump and cooler
1 chacked bag at same rate as adults first bag + 1 stroller + 1 car seat. 1 carry-on diaper bag per child is allowed + pump + milk cooler + (stroller??)
1 stroller + 1 carseat. carry on: diaper bag, pump, carry one size stroller, carseat
1 checked bag up to 50lb/23kg. 1 stroller 1 carseat. 1 carry on up to 13lb/6kg or a carry on size stroller
  • BA
1 checked bag 50lbs/23kg + two of the following: stroller,car/booster seat,travel cot,babyack carrier. 1 extra carryon bag.
  • ElAL
1 checked bag 50lb/23kg. 1 stroller or car seat. NO carry on. (its not like their makpid these days any way  :))
[/list]

Proof: Some airlines require proof of age. Rather bring along some kind of proof, and not get stuck because of an gate agent or TSA guard that had a bad day.

Infants are cute.

First time booking a infant on a seat (not on lap).
Called united they said I just book a full fare mile ticket through the airline I'm booking for myself (Agean in this case) even though I'm flying on united does this make sense?

If there is an extra seat next to me, any chance they will let me bring a car seat on for free?
Speaking from personal experience, the answer is yes.

Which airline were you successful with?

Also never been unsucessful,
LH J, F
TK J
Domestic: American, Alaska, United, and Southwest.

I (rarely) have had airlines tell me I  need to gate the check the car seat if I didn't purchase a seat. I say ok thanks, take the tag, walk down the jetway and stick the tag in my pocket. The flight attendants could care less, if there's an extra seat they're happy for you to have it. The battle is more getting the empty seat next to you and games with seating arrangements.

Alaska is the only one I know of that has a policy if you're flying with a lap infant, they block the seat next to you automatically unless the need to sell it - pretty awesome of them.

And how do you usually go about that?

One kid two parents? Aisle window with empty middle, or if whole not available, aisle and window in different rows as long as one has open middle, then ask to switch.

With two kids the shuffle gets more complicated, but I've managed to get full rows on both sides of the aisle with 2 adults and 2 lap infants

For both those options no real strategy - just hoping seats stay open

How's UA with letting you use an empty J seat to put a car seat? Specifically on EWR-HNL route.

Not sure about to HNL but I was able to take a empty seat for a infant EWR-ZRH no problem.

Hope it works out for you!
(Don't think it makes a difference but I didn't have a car seat I just put the seat into lie flat angle and put my kid to sleep there)
