Earning mileage: Infants (who don't pay for a full ticket) are not eligible to earn miles.

Luggage: Some people report that their friend or parent flew and got lucky. However, it's best to check with the Airline (on their website or calling them), BEFORE packing your suitcases. Here are some helpful links, plus a summary of baggage allowed for lap infants.
Child paying 10% of fare can check a small suitecase up to 10kg/20lb. Child paying 50%+ of adult fare can check standard baggage allowance (one full size suitcase 23kg/50lb) both are +stroller and car seat. One carry on + booster or infant seat + pump and cooler
1 chacked bag at same rate as adults first bag + 1 stroller + 1 car seat. 1 carry-on diaper bag per child is allowed + pump + milk cooler + (stroller??)
1 stroller + 1 carseat. carry on: diaper bag, pump, carry one size stroller, carseat
1 checked bag up to 50lb/23kg. 1 stroller 1 carseat. 1 carry on up to 13lb/6kg or a carry on size stroller
  • BA
1 checked bag 50lbs/23kg + two of the following: stroller,car/booster seat,travel cot,babyack carrier. 1 extra carryon bag.
  • ElAL
1 checked bag 50lb/23kg. 1 stroller or car seat. NO carry on. (its not like their makpid these days any way  :))
[/list]

Proof: Some airlines require proof of age. Rather bring along some kind of proof, and not get stuck because of an gate agent or TSA guard that had a bad day.

Infants are cute.

So I bought the UB travel bag for the stroller,  but I didn't know if the car seat fits in it too (or just the rumble seat). Do you know?

Can't imagine it would fit the car seat.

They won't give you a problem gate checking whatever you have.

There is some discussion on the internets about the safety of car seats after checking them. I know Dan won't gate check a car seat.

So what do you do with it if you don't have an empty seat to put it in on the plane?

Ask if there's any empty seats when you check in. If the flight is sold out and you're scared of the carseat getting damaged at gate check, then just check it in.

But then you have to carry the baby through the airport, no? (Assuming it's an infant who's car seat attaches to the stroller and you're not bringing a regular stoller seat since said infant is too young to be in one.)

I guess. That's why a lot of people make sure to have a baby carrier when they fly. I personally gate check it.

True, we do have a baby carrier. I forget about that.

There is some discussion on the internets about the safety of car seats after checking them. I know Dan won't gate check a car seat.

People get all riled up about car seats and checking them - what's funny is that they don't know that you can use car seats after a minor crash (yes, check the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration). Even better I don't understand how they think their car seats got to their house - they're shipped at some point, and I guarantee you they get into some jostling there. I'm pretty sure they can handle the baggage carrier walking it down the gate stairs and tossing it into the belly of the plane.

So what do you do with it if you don't have an empty seat to put it in on the plane?

Put it in the overhead. I've only not been able to make it fit on one tiny domestic plane (most planes with some maneuvering you can get it to fit), but that was with a maxi cosi-probably depends on the brand.

Haha, true regarding gate checking the car seats. Makes sense. Regarding the overhead bins, I'll have to try it. UB Mesa isn't the smallest one around.

Doesn't look too much bigger than the Maxi Cosi - I'd say you have a good shot

Could be, though having a seat to put it in makes it easier.
Get a Doona.
I'd love one. But after all the other things we just bought I'm out of money.

Or just gate check it
You want a chance to bring the car seat on board if you can

Currently, we are not all seated together in some of our flights.
Will checking in online (thereby having the current seats"official") diminish chances in getting us reseated, or does it make no difference?

On our QR 787 J flight we're seated in row 6, the row that just has 2 middle seats by themselves. Would it make sense to move to row 5 (which was a misaligned window) so we would have a chance at putting the car seat in one of the aisle seats? Here's the seat map for our flight:

I don't think they'll let you put a car seat as a single at the window. IF they let you put in a car seat, it would be as one of the two middle seats. Would it matter at that point for the extra seat to be the same row?
